The AHA is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Weston Bate on Tuesday, at the age of 93. A popular and influential local and urban historian, his many books include A History of Brighton (1962), Lucky City: The First Generation at Ballarat (1978) and Essential but Unplanned: The Story of Melbourne’s Lanes (1994). He was also a warm, challenging and inspiring teacher of history at the University of Melbourne and at Deakin University, where he was the foundation chair of Australian Studies. Our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
