Skills for New Historians Seminar: ‘Navigating the Transition from HDR to ECR

Online, Tuesday 21 November, 2.00pm to 3:30pm AEDT

The transition from PhD student to early career researcher can be extraordinarily difficult. For some ECRs this period of transition requires moving across the world; for others it requires stringing together multiple jobs while trying to keep their research ticking over; and for others it’s a time of furious adaptation as they adjust to new positions or career changes. Many are also working out how to articulate their new identities as scholars and professionals at the same time. The final AHA ECR seminar of 2023 will be a frank and open discussion of the notoriously difficult HDR-ECR transition. The AHA’s HDR and ECR representatives will be joined by a group of historians with a wide range of experiences, including Justine Greenwood (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and Kate Stevens (University of Waikato | Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato). All historians – postgrads, ECRs, and more experienced scholars alike – are warmly invited to hear these stories, share their own, and pose questions for discussion.
