Public Consultation, Heritage Listing for Elsie Refuge (former), Sydney

At its meeting on 2 April 2024, the Heritage Council of NSW resolved to give notice of its intention to consider listing Elsie Refuge (former) on the State Heritage Register. The site, at 73—75 Westmoreland Street, Glebe, has potential heritage significance as the first women’s refuge established in Australia. Emerging out of the Women’s Liberation Movement in the 1970s, Elsie offered a space of refuge from domestic violence against women and their children in Sydney and served as a model for other refuges around Australia. If you would like to comment on this potential listing or make a submission in support of it, you can do so via the NSW Environment website.
