James Jervis Memorial Lecture, Kate Fullagar, ‘Bennelong & Phillip’

Burnside Gardens Community Centre, Oatlands, Monday 21 October 2024, 7.30pm AEDT

AHA Vice President Kate Fullagar will deliver the 36th James Jervis Memorial Lecture, hosted by the Parramatta & District Historical Society. Kate’s book Bennelong & Phillip: A History Unravelled challenges many misconceptions about Bennelong and Phillip, among them that the former became alienated from his people and that the latter was a paragon of Enlightenment benevolence. It tells the story of the men’s marriages, including Bennelong’s best-known wife, Barangaroo, and Phillip’s unusual domestic arrangements, and places the period in the context of the Aboriginal world and the demands of empire. In this lecture, she will discuss both her method and her research, asking questions about conventional ways of writing history and of the role of the past in debates about nations and Indigenous possibility.
