Congratulations to Melanie Burkett for the publication of Opposing Australia’s First Assisted Immigrants, 1823-42 (Palgrave, 2021). The book disentangles the motivations behind the public denigration of the first significant group of free, working-class emigrants to NSW and touches on links to attitudes felt towards immigration and immigrants today.
