Shirleene Robinson and Simon Sleight are the editors of Children, Childhood and Youth in the British World (Palgrave Macmillan). Contributors – including AHA members Shurlee Swain, Yorick Smaal, Melissa Bellanta and Kate Darian-Smith – locate children, childhood and youth in broader social contexts and acknowledge young people as historical agents, rarely operating within situations of their choosing, but nonetheless shaping their own lives. Their experiences and the ways in which they were represented exemplify the processes through which ‘Britishness’ was expressed and contested across the globe. The book will be launched next year in London on 16 June at the inaugural Children’s History Society conference, and at a separate event in Sydney (details tbc).
