Trans people have been in Australia since time immemorial, though it is only since the end of the Second World War that there has been a clear discourse and visibility around transness. New South Wales has been the site of much of Australia’s trans visibility, including the first known trans organisation, the oldest service provider, and some of the more heated debates around trans rights. This presentation draws on research in Noah’s new book Transgender Australia: A History since 1910, focusing on NSW in the post-Second World War era.
