2003 Cabinet Records, National Archives of Australia

When the annual release of Cabinet records took place in January 2024, some Australians were shocked to learn that a large tranche of documents, including important National Security Committee (NSC) papers relating to Australian involvement in the war in Iraq, had been withheld from the Archives despite a request from cabinet historian David Lee that they be included in the release. A further 82 records have since been transferred, 14 of which are NSC documents on Iraq. Each of these 14 records is now open (or open with exception in two cases) and all are accessible online via RecordSearch. The AHA records its admiration for David’s handling of this nationally significant matter, and thanks members for their own interest in and advocacy around this important pursuit of transparency and accessibility.
