The AHA notes the passing of two influential Australian historians and sends condolences to their families:
Stuart Macintyre (1947-2021), a past President and Life Member of the AHA, was a brilliant historian, generous teacher and mentor, and passionate advocate for the civic importance of the study of history. Stuart has left an enormous intellectual legacy, particularly his prolific work on Australian labour and communist history. See obituaries from Janet McCalman in The Conversation and Brian Aarons & Tim Rowse in Search Foundation.
Babette Smith (1942-2021), a longtime AHA member, was an important author and feminist as well as having careers in the law and the entertainment industry. Babette was an insightful and generous scholar who made an outstanding contribution to colonial history, particularly in relation to convict women.
