Zoe Laidlaw and Edmond Smith are seeking applicants for two funded PhD positions working on the legacies of Atlantic slavery. One project will explore how British merchants involved in transatlantic slavery helped establish the settler colonial state of Victoria. The other will explore how economic thinking, colonial governance and business practice shifted to generate new forms of imperial labour in Britain and its empire between 1750 and 1850. Successful candidates will study at the University of Melbourne and the University of Manchester.
